Mansfield sits astride the River Maun, to the west of Sherwood Forest. Best known for its collieries and slag heaps, it has been a Roman settlement, royal burgh and thriving market town in its time.
These days nearby attractions include the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre, where you can learn all about the legend of Robin Hood or start one of the many marked walks through the 450 acres of ancient Royal Forest.
