Newark-on-Trent is an ancient town and the site of the 12th century riverside wall and castle gatehouse, it is familiar to the people of the town, as well as the masses who travel through the country on the Great North Road.
Newark Castle, where King John died in 1216, was largely destroyed during the Civil War but endured three sieges for the Royalist cause before falling.
Historic buildings, some half-timbered, some Georgian and some Victorian, flank the medieval, cobbled market place. The parish church of St. Mary Magdalene towers over the market place with its 240ft west spire. A shop in the market place has the distinction of being the first to publish the literary works of Lord Byron.
