Peterborough is in the county of Cambridgeshire. It is an ancient settlement where local excavations have unearthed dwellings from around 3,700 BC. The Roman fortress, Durobrivae, stood here but Peterborough’s splendour has to be the Norman cathedral, which stands on the site of two previous Christian abbeys dedicated to St. Peter, the first one dating from the 7th century.

An impressive 17th century Butter Cross, or Guildhall, dominates the market place and Longthorpe Tower is reputed to have the finest examples of medieval domestic wall paintings in the country, if not northern Europe. The Museum & Art Gallery represent local life from the Jurassic Age to the 21st century centre for engineering and manufacturing that is Peterborough today.

Peterborough is one of four Environment Cities in Britain and takes great pride in this accolade. To explore the green surrounds of Peterborough try the Millennium Green Wheel a fifty-mile circular route, which supplies information about important local people or events along the way.
