Birmingham is Britain's second largest city with over a million people. Having played a pivotal role in the Industrial Revolution and Britain's subsequent prosperity, it still suffers unfairly from a somewhat grim image, but its rich architectural legacy can still be seen, particularly in the neo-classical Town Hall and fine Council House.

Birmingham actually has more waterways than Venice; you can join boat trips at Summer Row, Kingston Row and the Gas Street Basin. Land-lovers can explore the network by taking one of the many designated walks along the towpaths.
