Historic Lichfield has two main attractions: its gorgeous three spired cathedral, which boasts some of the finest stained glass windows in the country; and the Johnsonian Birthplace Museum that gives a fascinating insight into the life and works of one of the most famous figures of the 18th century. Nearby in Burton-upon-Trent the towns prosperity was founded on brewing. The town originally grew around the Burton-on-Trent Abbey and the monastery of Saint Modwen. Tutbury Castle is a massive fortified complex, where Mary Queen of Scots was held captive.
