Tamworth in Staffordshire is an ancient settlement and was the capital of the Saxon kingdom of Mercia in the 8th century. King Alfred’s daughter Aetheflaed built the first fortification here early in the 10th century, which was replaced by a Norman motte & bailey castle.
Tamworth Castle is unusual in that among the apartments open to the public, almost every century between the 12th and 20th is represented. William the Conqueror’s champion, Robert de Marmion, built the castle at the confluence of the rivers Tame and Anker and there are some lovely riverside walks within the grounds.
Tamworth has plenty to offer thrill seekers; Drayton Manor has over 100 rides and attractions, including Europe’s only stand-up roller coaster, while Snowdome offers a 170-metre slope covered with real snow.
