Wolverhampton is known for its iron and brass foundries and does battle with Dudley for the title 'capital of the Black Country. It was an important settlement long before the industrial revolution, which it is now associated with. Wulfruna, sister of Mercian King Edgar, founded a monastery here in 994 A.D. near the site that has been occupied by St. Peters Church since the 12th century.
Recently awarded city status Wolverhampton has an impressive selection of galleries and museums. Bantock House & Park explores the areas heritage and the Art Gallery houses a diverse collection including works by Gainsborough, Landseer and Warhol.
Mosley Old Hall, is where Charles II sought refuge after the Battle of Worcester. The National Trust now runs the property.
