Osmotherley

Osmotherley marks the northern gateway to the North York Moors and Cleveland Hills and is a gorgeous grey stone village where John Wesley once preached at the stone table by the village cross. Despite the teetotal preachers best efforts there are a number of lovely old pubs serving great food.

Members of the Lyke Wake Club make the Queen Catherine their unofficial HQ and anyone who can undertake the 42-mile walk to Ravenscar, near Robin Hoods Bay, in 24-hours is eligible to join.

Mount Grace Priory is two miles from the village and is the most important Carthusian ruin in the country. The Carthusian monks were a particularly hermetic order, who lived a spartan life free from luxury and comfort, which is very evident by the austere two storey cells where the monks passed their solitary lives.
