Bamburgh beaches are among Northumberlands finest and are overlooked by an impressive castle, which stands on a rocky outcrop and dominates the landscape for miles around. The inside of the castle's main focal point is the exquisite teak-ceiling which has massive dimensions and whose main redeeming feature is the impressive Faberge stone animal carvings.
Bamburgh was also the birthplace of Grace Darling who famously rescued nine shipwrecked people from an almost certain death off the Farne Islands during a terrible storm in 1838. Her bravery is recalled in the Grace Darling Museum and a monument to her stands in St. Aidans churchyard.
Lying inland is the tiny hamlet of Branxton, which was the site of the Battle of Flodden Field in 1513, when the Scottish army suffered their greatest ever defeat at the hands of the auld enemy.
