Berwick-upon-Tweed is England’s northernmost town, which has been ravaged by border battles through the years and changed hands thirteen times before it finally became an English territory in 1482.
In Berwick there is a great selection of museums and galleries that cover local and regimental history as well as offering an impressive selection of local and international artworks. The eighteenth century Town Hall still has its original jail and houses the interesting Cell Block Museum.
Nearby are the Holy Trinity Church and opposite, the Barracks where a museum and art gallery are located in its Clock Block. If its something a tad more relaxing then take a stroll along the top of Berwick’s walls and ramparts, giving a panoramic view of the pretty Georgian mansions populating Berwick-upon-Tweed.
