Rotherham has many sights for the tourist: the town museum is at Clifton Park and is worth a visit to learn about the history of the area. The Rotherham Art Gallery is a great way to spend an afternoon; it holds exhibitions throughout the year and contains various works of art including photography, Victorian paintings and contemporary art works.
To the southeast of the town is the Rother Valley Country Park which is a 1,000 acre site with a water-sports centre, where you can try cable skiing, jet skiing, wind surfing, sailing and canoeing, a craft centre, cycle ways, designated walks and a nature reserve.
To the east of Rotherham is Roche Abbey, which dates from 1147. Though the site is mostly ruinous it is a lovely, calm spot that occupies both banks of the Maltby Beck. Capability Brown reshaped the grounds in the 18th century and displayed a surprising disregard for the abbey’s architecture and buried or removed parts of the structure.
