The historic market town of Skipton is just over the North Yorkshire border and is the self-styled 'Gateway to the Dales'.
Since Saxon times the town was an important sheep trading centre as it was situated on the easiest Pennine’s crossing, the Aire Gap and after the Norman invasion was significant enough to warrant a Lord of the Manor and a castle.
It is a pleasant market town, the most significant town before the Dales truly begin, and makes a good base for exploring the beautiful surrounding countryside. The castle is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the country and is fascinating.
