Grassington, is the main village of the Dales and consequently is where the Yorkshire Dales National Park have their offices. While it is true that this Georgian built town is slightly more 'touristy' than most of its near neighbours, it is still an undeniably beautiful place.
Following the Dales Way out of Grassington you will be greeted by the first stiff climb of the walk as you reach the spectacularly overhanging limestone cliff face of Kilnsey Crag. Eight miles north of Grassington is another former mining community and one of Upper Wharfedale’s prettiest villages, Kettlewell.
You climb as you get nearer to the source of the Wharfe on the moors of Langstrothdale, where the river makes its way through pretty hamlets such as Yockenthwaite before it parts company Dales Way, which carries on into Cumbria and terminates at Bowness on Windermere.
