Ripon is the home of Yorkshire’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is also the National Trust’s most frequently visited paid tourist attraction, Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Park Waterpark. The most complete Cistercian Abbey remains in the country are surrounded by one of the finest examples of a 18th century Water Garden in existence.

The first cathedral built in Ripon was founded in the 7th century by St.Wilfrid, though only the crypt remains of the original structure thanks to the marauding 9th century Danes. The church that stands today is the forth to have stood on this site and features almost every style of ecclesiastic architecture.

Other Ripon attractions include the 16th century half-timbered Wakeman’s House, the Police & Prison Museum, the Workhouse Museum and Ripon races, where 14 days of flat racing are held each summer.
