Beverley lies 9 miles to the north of Hull and is one of Yorkshire's finest towns, boasting not one but two great Gothic churches, Beverley Minster and St. Mary’s. The town features many grand old buildings, 350 of them are listed as possessing historical or architectural interest.
Beverley Minster dominates the town’s skyline with its twin towers as well as much of the surrounding flat countryside. It is widely believed to be one of the best Gothic buildings in the whole of the British Isles and the most impressive church that is not a cathedral.
St. Mary's, somewhat eclipsed by the Minster is also ranked among the greatest parish churches of England and if you can stand another tour, really worth visiting. It was a favourite of Sir John Betjeman, the late Poet Laureate, who said of Beverley, There is a great surprise in store.
