The North West is a region of contrasts; while the industrial centres of Manchester and Liverpool have both enjoyed a big renaissance in the last couple of decades, and now boast arts and cultural scenes to rival that of the capital, the Lake District is little changed from the days when William Wordsworth wandered its vast open spaces.
The area is made up of 6 counties which include the exclusive town of Chester which lies at the heart of Cheshire: it has the best preserved Roman town wall in Britain and is famous for its medieval Rows and houses. The second is Manchester and Liverpool who have certainly risen phoenix-like from post industrial depression to become two of the most happening cities in Britain with vibrant nightlife, music, shops and culture to match their proud heritage and fierce rivalry.
Then there is Lancashire which was once the centre of the coal and cotton trade at the heart of the Industrial Revolution. Mills can be seen all over the county in towns such as Bolton, Blackburn, and Rochdale, birthplace of the Co-Operative Movement. Blackpool is the typical English seaside resort with all you’d expect. The fifth region is the Lake District National Park which is one of the most stunningly beautiful and popular regions in Britain. Great stretches of water such as Windermere and Coniston punctuate a landscape of rolling green dales and majestic craggy mountains.
The last county is situated on the Scottish – English border, Carlisle has always been of strategic importance; it’s a good base to explore some of the best sections of Hadrian’s Wall and the North Pennines. The coastal area is less visited than the Lakes, but does have some beautiful scenery and was favoured by the artist JM Turner.
