Situated on the Scottish – English border, Carlisle has always been of strategic importance; it’s a good base to explore some of the best sections of Hadrian’s Wall and the North Pennines. The coastal area is less visited than the Lakes, but does have some beautiful scenery and was favoured by the artist JM Turner. There are some attractive coastal towns such as Georgian Whitehaven and the region can best be explored along the Coastal Path. For more adventurous this is also the start of the Coast-to-Coast Walk across the country.
