Ravenglass is situated on the estuary of three rivers, the Esk, the Mite and the Irt and is the only coastal town in the Lake District National Park.
The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway is a popular tourist attraction where a narrow gauge railway that was once used to transport minerals has been transformed into a miniature railway that runs from the coast to the heart of Lakeland.
The town was an important Roman naval base at one time and has one of the largest Roman remains, in the shape of a bathhouse, in the country. Muncaster Castle is also worth visiting for its fine collection of art and antiquities.
