The Cumbrian Coast offers some dramatic scenery and fine old towns but in places is scared by the marks of industry. Smoking stacks and cooling towers feature intermittently on the horizon and Sellafield, probably the most controversial industrial site in the United Kingdom, is located on this stretch of coast.
This area comprises a large part of the Cumbrian Coastal Way, a walk that should be broken into short stretches to discover the places of interest en route. St. Bees Head marks the central apex of the coastline and is the start point of the Coast-to-Coast Walk, which finishes at Robin Hood’s Bay near Scarborough on the East Coast.
The nearby towns of Seascale, St Bees, Allonby, and Silloth have gorgeous beaches and scenery, so it's worth getting a car and exploring each place.
