The south of this locality is comprised of the Northern Pennines, which has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The sandstone town of Brampton lies to the northeast, in an area that was once the northern frontier of the Roman Empire and is consequently strewn with the remains of their legacy. Hadrian’s Wall passes by a few miles from the centre of town.
On your way to the Wall from Brampton you will pass Lanercost Priory, which was completed early in the 13th century. It fell into disrepair after the dissolution of the monasteries but the nave has been restored and now serves as a Parish Church.
