Cartmel is one of the South Lakelands oldest villages. It grew up around it's famous 12th Century priory. Coronation Street fans will know Cartmel as the place that Mavis Wilton, née Riley, retired to.
Among wider circles it is better known for the splendid priory church 'St Mary and St Micheal' that dates from 1188. The church has a diagonally crowned tower which is the most distinctive feature outside. The East Window is quite spectacular inside and the church treasures also include an original copy of Spenser’s the Faerie Queen.
Everything in the town is centred by the attractive Market Square, with it's Elizabethian cobbles, water pump and fish slabs.
