Walney Island measures only 11 miles in length and just under 1 mile in width at its widest point, it is just across the tip of the Furness Peninsula. This wonderful island host's a number of events throughout the year including the 'Swim around Walney', 'Walney boat show', 'Walney air show' and the fantsatic 'Walney Carnival'.
From Barrow-in-Furness, three ‘islands’ are accessible, though only Walney is a true island. Roa is at the tip of the Furness headland and Piel is situated out in Morcambe Bay and can only be reached by boat. These days it seems extremely remote but once up to 250ships could be anchored in the harbour at any one time.
The island has one permanent resident, the King of Piel, who is landlord of the island’s inn. The king’s realm is not a mighty one and only contains two buildings; the pub and a ruined castle, though he can bestow the title of Knight of Piel on any visitor he believes to be deserving of the honour.
