Stockport in Lancashire used to be a firm favourite with medieval wealthy landowners, who built their fine houses around the market square.
Like the many nearby towns it embraced the cotton industry and was ideally placed to do so, thanks to the soft Peak District waters that flowed through the town.
Local attractions include an impressive viaduct, dating from the mid 19th century and National Trust Property, Lyme Park, which featured in the celebrated BBC production of Pride & Prejudice.
