Birkenhead is on the north side of the Wirral looking out over the Mersey. It was a quiet little village until the Laird Ship Yard opened in 1824 and turned it into a busy Victorian town. Hamilton Square is full of listed buildings and stands as testament to the boom years of the 19th century.
The Wirral Museum is located in the former Town Hall, which is also in Hamilton Square and Birkenhead is also home to the Historic Warships Museum, which features the largest collection of 20th century fighting vessels in the country.
