Cockermouth is an attractive market town just outside the boundary to the Lake District National Park. It is one of Cumbria’s oldest settlements and is best known as the birthplace of famous poet, William Wordsworth. The Georgian townhouse where he was born, Wordsworth House, in Main Street is open to the public and run by the National Trust.
The town has the fairy tale remains of a 12th century castle and though they are not generally open to the public they are open on certain days during the Cockermouth Festival in July.
Other attractions include the hour and a half tour of Jennings Brewery for you beer lovers, for sheep lovers there is the Lakeland Sheep and Wool Centre with sheep shearing displays amongst others.
