The red sandstone town of Penrith lies to the north of Lakeland proper and often referred to as 'the northern gateway'. Narrow lanes and alleyways knit together the main streets, which centre on the ancient market place, and are stuffed to the gunnels with shops selling Lakeland delicacies such as Cumberland Sausage, fudge and Kendal Mint Cake.

At the top of the town stand the imposing ruins of Penrith Castle, which dates from the late 14th century and was built as a defence to ward off potential Scottish raids. Surrounded by a moat and among pleasant parklands, you access the castle via an appealing wooden bridge.

Overlooking the town is 937ft Penrith Fell, where beacons have been lit since the time of Henry VIII to warn of raids by lawless Border Rievers. It doesn’t see much action these days but a monument dating from the 18th century marks its former strategic significance. More rewarding are the views from the top of the Eden Valley, Lake District and Scottish mountains.
