Kirkby Stephen is the highest town on the Eden River at 600ft and as well as being a great base for walking in the Eden Valley, it is also on the route of a popular coast-to-coast walk (east-west). It has a 14th Century market charter and markets are still held here every monday.
As far as attractions go the Loki Stone at the west end of the town is of historic significance. It is adorned with carvings and is thought to be a relic from the times when the Vikings were in residence.
The Fold Gallery in the town is a non-profit space exhibiting contemporary art with a rural edge and is a welcome break from the great wide open.
