On the northeast bank of Lake Windermere is Ambleside, an extremely popular spot with walkers, which sometimes appears to be a sea of fluorescent cagoules. However there are any number of routes that will whisk you away to somewhere much more remote in no time at all.
The village itself is compact but houses a number of places to stay and eat and the Victorian houses are a point of interest for any English history enthusiasts.
A lovely spot about a mile from the town centre is Stockghyll Force waterfall, which is set in gorgeous woodland. Or those people who like to get out on the water can catch pleasure cruisers from the Waterhead Pier.
