Windermere at over ten miles long is the largest of the Lakes, the largest in England and contains some 14 islands. Pleasure cruisers and powerboats zip around the waterway, which they share with rowboats, water skiers and an assortment of other craft. It is the busiest area of the lakes and attracts many tourists.
The town of Windermere lies on the lake’s east bank and some of the best views of the area can be enjoyed from Orrest Head, which can be reached in minutes, via a meandering footpath that starts by the Windermere Hotel.
Biskey How, overlooks the quaint neighbouring village of Bowness. Bowness is home to the World of Beatrix Potter, which is a museum dedicated to the life and work of the author and is currently celebrating the centenary of two of her well loved characters, Squirrel Nutkin and the Tailor of Gloucester.
