Chester was the Northwests most important port until the Dee estuary silted up and the port of Liverpool grew in standing. By the 17th century the slave and sugar trades were increasing the traffic through the citys waterways but it wasnt until the arrival of the steam ships in 1840 that Liverpools docks grew into the seven and a half mile network that comprised one of the worlds largest ports.

Both Cunard and the White Star Line used the port of Liverpool meaning the traffic was in people as often as it was in freight, with the first great influx arriving after the potato famine of 1845 when 1 1/2 million people left Ireland, many of them settling here. The Liverpudlian "Scouse" accent owes much to these Irish immigrants.

Much of the citys architecture dates from the 19th century with the best examples including St. Georges Hall, which is widely held to be among the finest examples of the Greco-Roman style in Europe and the Town Hall, which was designed by John Wood, the man responsible for many of Baths grand buildings.

Two cathedrals dominate the city from hilltop vantage points. The Anglican Cathedral was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and though work started on the Gothic sandstone building in 1904 it was not completed until 1978. The Catholic Cathedral was intended to be a classically inspired, domed Edwin Lutyens design but spiralling costs meant that a contemporary design by Sir Frederick Gibberd was used instead.
