The drab days of boarded up shops and tired streets have gone and Liverpool's city centre is now a buzz of coffee shops, loft apartments and boutiques selling everything from old records to second hand clothes alongside the designer bars in Concert Square. If you just want high street chain shops, Clayton Square shopping centre is nearby.
For art then FACT (Film, Art & Creative Technology) has galleries showcasing community work as well as film screenings and the Open Eye Gallery has photography and film exhibitons. The Bluecoat Chambers is a beautiful 18th century building now a contemporary gallery.
Well worth a visit is the National Conservation Centre which takes a peek behind the scenes of the art restoration world.
