The historic town of Newry is nestled right on the border between County Down and County Armagh and is one of the main gateways between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Two of the oldest churches in Ireland can be found in Newry.
Staunchly Republican and with a history of IRA cross-border attacks and bombings, you’ll feel more security presence here than in other parts of Northern Ireland, but it’s an attractive part of Ireland where things are getting back to normality.
It’s a good base for exploring the surrounding area, is the major shopping centre for miles around and the local area is teeming with areas of archeological interest, having been inhabited for over 6,000 years.
