The peninsula of Fife juts stoicly into the North Sea between the Firth of Tay to the north and The Firth of Forth to the south, splitting Dundee and Edinburgh with a chisel of land.
First settled in the fourth century by the Picts and its name is most likley derived from Fibh, a 7th century Pictish king. Like many islands and peninsulas it has always held onto a certain stong sense of it own, quite apart from Scotland main.
Fife has two quite distinct flavours - the university town and home of golf, St Andrews with its pretty fishing villages along the east a Dunfermline, the old Scottish capital.
