St Andrews dominates East Fife as it is Scotland’s pre-reformation ecclesiastical capital, home to the country’s oldest university and worldwide HQ for the game of golf.
Despite its importance St. Andrews is very small and compact with just three main streets, where almost every structure is a listed building. The town is often likened to Oxford or Cambridge and this comparison is fair in that they are all towns, dominated by ancient university colleges.
St. Andrews is most widely known as the spiritual home of golf. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club, the oldest in the world, was founded in 1754 and it is here that the official rules governing the game were instated.
