Braemar holds the record for the lowest recorded temperature in Britain of -27.2 degrees C, on 10 January 1982. It is also known for being the meeting point of the three passes in Upper Deeside where Clunie Water flowing north from the Cairnwell joins the upper River Dee.
Braemar is a highland village famous for its annual highland games. The royal highland residence, Balmoral, is only six miles away and the royal family always attends the games, which is why they are so famous. These days it is advisable to get tickets in advance if you want to be sure to get in, particularly if you are travelling a great distance to get there.
The village itself is a pretty spot, if a little twee, with a castle and some excellent walking nearby. There are a couple of good B&Bs, a hostel/ lodge and places to eat.
