It is the size & scope of the Cairngorm mountains that make them so impressive: there are over twenty peaks that top 3,000ft. Experienced walkers & climbers can explore the region on foot and take the Lairig Ghrupass through some of Europes most isolated terrain. The rest of us should stick to the Cairngorm Mountain Railway. Close by is Britains premier ski resort, Aviemore, which is about forty minutes drive from Inverness airport. The Spey river twists through the area, and on its banks are a number of malt whisky distilleries many of them offering tasting sessions.
