Named after George II's chubby son, otherwise known as the "butcher duke of Cumberland of Culloden, Fort Augustus was built as a barracks in 1715.
The surrounds are scenic and there are few interesting museums and buildings to take a look at. You could visit the Clansmen Centre, which has an informative and interactive exhibition space about traditional Highland culture. Or for a photographic and film based history lesson, head to the Caledonian Canal Heritage Centre.
Situated by the Caledonian Canal, it is certainly a tiny village you could stop off if you have some time up your sleeve.
