The Caledonian Canal slices through the highlands, running alongside the Great Glen between Fort William and Inverness.
Designed by Thomas Telford with the 22 man made miles built between 1803 - 1822, the Caledonian Canal was Britain’s first state funded transportation system and it remains publicly owned to this day.
Interestingly, this incredible 60 miles long stretch is almost two-thirds naturally occurring bodies of water.
As far back as the early eighteenth century people were planning to join the series of Lochs; Loch Linnie, Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness to link the West and East coasts.
