The far northwest corner of Scotland is known as Cape Wrath, the name is taken from the Norse word meaning ‘turning point’ and here you will find the highest cliffs in Britain. It is a wild and beautiful spot, as much for its feeling of remoteness as anything else.
To the West is the region of Caithness, which is quite wild and unspoilt and is where you will find the late Queen mother’s private residence, the Castle of Mey.
The road to Cape Wrath can be closed due for military purposes so check in advance. There is also a foot passenger ferry across the Kyle of Durness estuary which links up with a minibus to explore the cape. Another good way of exploring the place is to hire a bike.
