Farther north you enter the wilds of Sutherland, far and away Britain’s most sparsely populated district. In the early 1800s land owners drove the people from the land to make way for livestock and the population has never recovered.
The upside of this is that, it is an ideal habitat for some of Britain’s most rare species of wildlife and golden eagles, deer, pine martens and wild cats all live here among craggy mountains and wide, wild plains. The rivers are rich with salmon and trout and the sea is home to all manner of sea birds, seal and fish.
The beautiful Dunrobin Castle is one of the oldest continuously inhabited houses in Britain; it is the largest house in the Northern Highlands and has fantastic French influences. The Castle has superb views overlooking the North Sea and the gardens are magical, be sure to pay a visit if you’re in Sutherland.
