The fishing port of Ullapool developed in the late 18th century and is a major sea angling centre today. It is also the gateway to the Hebrides as there is a ferry service to Stornaway on Lewis.
Ullapool lies in the Gulf Stream, which means it enjoys exceptionally mild weather, considering how far north it is and the incongruous site of palm trees in Scotland will greet you.
Ullapool is an obvious hideaway if the weather is bad, with it's cosy pubs, swimming pool and a lively arts centre, the Ceilidh Place.
