Hoy is like no other place in the Orkney Islands. A far cry from the usual rolling green pastoral land; Hoy is made up of dramatic glacial valleys, hilly moorlands and red sandstone cliffs that plunges into the surrounding ocean.
Rackwick lies crammed between impressive cliffs and is the old fishing village of the island. Close by there are some notable sites that are checking out.
The towering sea cliffs at St John’s Head are the highest in the country and not to be taken lightly! Bring your walking boots, as most sites are best discovered on foot.
Lyness lies on the sheltered eastern side of Hoy and was a major port for the Royal Navy during both world wars. For the war historians, there are loads of fascinating wartime relics and concrete structures to see.
