Little has changed in Kirkwall since the 1600s and on initial viewing, the Orkney capital may not appear to be top pick of places to go.
There is however, the domineeringly spectacular sandstone St. Magnus Cathedral, which is over 850 years old and by far the most compelling medieval building in northern Scotland.
Kirkwall offers a bustling harbour, while the town centre is home to a display of fascinating architectural and historical attractions.
