The hilly, windswept northern island of Rousay is famous for its intriguing archaeological sites.
The main settlement on the island is no more than a string of houses, however heading further a field (on foot or bike is viable) you will reach the fascinating chambered cairns that put Rousay on the map.
Rousay has been referred to as 'the Egypt of the North' with it's numerous sites such as Taversoe Tuick, Blackhammer Cairn, Knowe of Yarso and most significant, the Midhowe Cairn.
