Garvald

Surrounded by rolling fields and woodland, Garvald is a picturesque hamlet in the hills in East Lothian. The homes in the village are built almost entirely from the bright reddish stone from the nearby Rattlebags Quarry. The quarry played an important part of the town’s economy, and stone from it was used in many of buildings in the near-by village of Haddington including St Mary's Church.

The Garvald and Bara Parish Church is found at the east end of Garvald and is at the centre of a conservation area that includes the old schoolhouse nearby. Originally built in the 1100s, with major renovations in 1829, the church has a wood ceiling, and a light and airy atmosphere.
