Galashiels is a wool and tweed town situated high on the hills above Gala Water and the highest point in the area is Meghill at 1480 feet. The name is derived from the old word ‘shiels’, which means houses or dwellings so quite literally the town’s name means houses by the Gala.

The town was chartered in 1599 and today they still hold annual celebrations to commemorate that event. The Braw Lads’ Gathering is a weeklong celebration featuring re-enactments of key historical events, Scottish Country Dancing, concerts and a mounted cavalcade.

Galashiels motto ‘sour plums’, which is in evidence all around the town, pertains to 1337 when a group of English raiders were killed as they stopped to pick wild plums.
