Peebles is an ancient place; Alexander III founded the Cross Kirk in 1261. By 1367 the town had developed from a few houses around Neidpath Castle and was granted royal burgh status by David II.

Peebles most famous sons are William & Robert Chambers, who published the first Chambers dictionaries and encyclopaedias. The brothers gave the town the Chambers Institute in the High Street and this now houses the Tweeddale Museum & Gallery, which features local art and history.

The real joy of a visit to Peebles is the countryside and outdoor pursuits; with walking, golfing, fishing and trekking all readily available. If money is no object sign up for some healthy activity and stay in luxury at the Peebles Hydro. Horticulturists will enjoy the formal walled garden, Kailzie Gardens. Beautifully situated in the Tweed Valley and featuring roses, Victorian greenhouses, herbaceous borders, woodland and beautiful bank-side walks.
