Selkirk lies to the north of Hawick on the salmon and trout filled waters of Ettrick. The town was once famous for its shoes, which is why residents are known as ‘souters’ or shoemakers.

The area is closely associated with William Wallace who was declared Guardian of Scotland at ‘forest kyrk' in the Forest of Ettrick. The town of Selkirk is also closely associated with the Battle of Flodden, the town was quick to answer the call of the King but only one ‘souter’ survived the battle.

Sir Walter Scott was the Sheriff of Selkirk for thirty-three years between 1799 and 1832 and his statue overlooks the Market Square. His home Abbottsford House is three miles out of the town and has been converted into a museum and he is buried some five miles east of the town at Dryburgh Abbey. Another of the Selkirk’s famous son’s was the explorer Mungo Park, whose statue adorns the High Street.
