The work of genius architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh shouts and screams Glasgow! His work is the main contributor to bringing Glasgow to the forefront of early 20th century art and design. Mackintoshes' work is a visual fusion of beauty, marrying Gothic with Scot baronial and modern design with Art Nouveau.
For those unfamiliar with the style, think abstract organic forms and muted colours, tall backed chairs, Oriental reliefs fused with stylised Celtic design! The pinnacle of his work culminates in the famous structure of the Glasgow School of Art. Another notable development not to be missed is The Lighthouse. Don't be mislead by the name, there is nothing-nautical going on here. The building was actually built to house the Glasgow Herald and warrants it's name from the hovering tower that protrudes from its corner. The city is littered with marks of Mr Mackintosh giving Glasgow temple status for art and design lovers.
