Kintyre Peninsula

Campbeltown is the main centre on the Kintyre peninsula; it is impressively situated around a small loch and surrounded by hills. Though most of its whiskey distilleries have closed and the fishing fleet is greatly reduced, it still has an air of hustle & bustle about it.

Further north is Tarbert, which joins Kintyre and Knapdale. The local herring industry has been significantly curtailed by EU quotas and the town no relies more on tourism to sustain its economy. Each May the Bell Lawrie Scottish Series takes place and as the north of Britains largest yachting regatta it attracts a huge number of visitors. High on a hill with far reaching views out across the bay sits Tabert Castle, now totally ruined and thought to be quite unsafe it was once a stronghold of Robert the Bruce.

Inveraray is a lovely town. It has been the seat of the Dukes of Argyll since the early 1400s however; in the mid-17th century the Marquis of Montrose burned much of the original village to the ground. Just over 100 years later the 3rd Duke of Argyll decided to rebuild the castle and village and today we find a classic example of a planned Georgian town.
